Every source behind every figure on this site, named, linked and dated. The first section is the one to read: it shows, series by series, whether our number from it is current and what publishes next, so you can see at a glance whether you are looking at this week's figure or last quarter's. After that come the sections that explain how each benchmark is actually built and where index numbers mislead, then the sources themselves grouped by subject. Nothing paid for is copied here. Where a source is licensed, the page says so and links you to the publisher instead.

Is every figure fresh, and what publishes next

Every number on this site carries its own date and updates on its own rhythm. The strip below says when each source was last read and warns, in your browser, when one has gone quiet past its schedule. When a source cannot be reached, the module it feeds says so instead of quietly repeating an old figure. Licensed and paywalled data is linked, never copied, which is why some numbers you may expect are links instead. Where a commercial figure has already been printed inside a United States government report, we quote it from that report, credited exactly as the report credits it, and say plainly that it is delayed. The live feed and the paid history behind it stay links.

How each benchmark is actually built

The Cotlook A Index is the world cash price reference, published every trading day by Cotlook Ltd in Liverpool. It is built from offering prices for upland cotton of Middling 1-1/8 inch staple delivered CFR Far Eastern ports, from a list of growths around the world; the index is the average of the cheapest five quotations on the day. That construction is the point: it tracks what a Far Eastern spinner would actually pay for the most competitive cotton available, not any one origin. The daily value is Cotlook's product. The figure on our market page is the daily reading as USDA prints it in its own world market prices report, credited by USDA to Cotton Outlook; the five year chart uses the World Bank's monthly averages, because a five year line is a monthly thing. Cotlook's live feed and its paid history are linked, never copied.

ICE Cotton No. 2 is the New York futures contract: 50,000 pounds of US upland cotton, physically deliverable, trading in March, May, July, October and December. The nearby is simply the closest active month, and it is the number people mean when they say "New York". Mills and merchants worldwide hedge on it, so it moves first and everything else adjusts around it.

The US spot price on our page is USDA's weekly average of real quotations for base quality upland cotton across seven designated US spot markets. It is a cash price for actual bales, which is why it usually sits below the futures.

The AWP, adjusted world price, is USDA's weekly translation of the Far East A Index back to a US mill door: the world price minus the average cost of getting US base quality cotton to the Far East. It exists to run the US marketing loan programme, and it matters to everyone else because it signals when US cotton is cheap or dear against the world.

Shankar-6 is the Gujarat upland variety that dominates Indian exports, quoted in rupees per candy of 355.62 kg. It is the price a Bangladeshi spinner compares an offer against, because Bangladesh buys Indian lint in quantity, and that is why it sits on our benchmarks card alongside New York and the A Index. It is the wrong yardstick for a Pakistani buyer: Pakistan does not import Indian cotton, so a Karachi offer measured against Shankar-6 is being measured against a market it cannot buy from.

WASDE is USDA's monthly world balance sheet: production, mill use, trade and ending stocks by country. The single most useful derived number is the stocks to use ratio, ending stocks divided by consumption; when it tightens, prices have historically firmed, and when it swells, they soften.

Index numbers, and the trap in them

Two of the charts on the market page are index numbers rather than prices: the producer price series from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Eurostat survey balances. Both are useful and both are easy to misread, so it is worth two minutes.

A producer price index is not a price. It is a number that says how far a price has moved since an arbitrary base period, when the index was set to 100. Every BLS series carries its own base year, chosen when the series was created. So cotton spun yarn reading 82 and rayon spun yarn reading 188 does not mean rayon costs more than twice as much as cotton. It means rayon has risen much further from its own starting point. Dividing one published index by another is arithmetic on two different rulers and the answer means nothing.

Which is why we rebase. Every line on those charts is reset to 100 at the start of the window shown, so all of them are measured from the same moment. That turns the chart into the one question it can honestly answer: over these same months, which input moved further. The rebasing is our arithmetic and the charts say so; the raw published index for the latest month is printed underneath so nothing is hidden behind it.

A percentage balance is not a percentage. The Eurostat survey numbers on the Europe page run from -100 to +100 and are the share of respondents answering "more" minus the share answering "less". A reading of -4 does not mean a four per cent fall in anything. It means four per cent more retailers expect fewer orders than expect more. Consumer confidence sits below zero almost permanently, so its level tells you very little and its direction tells you a great deal.

Preliminary means it will change. BLS may revise an index for up to four months after first publishing it, and customs data is revised for longer. We read the recent months again on every run rather than appending to a stored series, so a revision reaches the page instead of being frozen into it. The twelve month figures for garment lines and for US apparel imports would cost dozens of calls to a slow public service every week, so for those the newest three months are read again on every run and each older month again after about three months.

Reading trade statistics without fooling yourself

The garment and Europe pages are built on customs data, which is the most solid material available and also the easiest to misuse. Five things worth knowing before you quote any of it in a meeting.

HS codes are a treaty, not a catalogue. Every country classifies traded goods on the same six digit Harmonised System, which is what makes the numbers comparable at all. But the codes were drawn up for customs officers, not for merchandisers, so they cut the market in places no buyer would. Chapter 61 is knitted or crocheted apparel and chapter 62 is everything woven; that split is real and useful. Below it, the categories can be strange.

There is no code for denim jeans. Not in the United States, not in the EU, not anywhere: the Harmonised System has none. Jeans are counted inside cotton woven trousers, code 620342 for men and 620462 for women, together with chinos, cargos and every other cotton woven trouser. Anyone showing you a chart of "denim imports" from HS data has either used those two lines and relabelled them, or has bought an estimate from a consultancy. Our pages label those lines "includes denim jeans" and never present them as a denim figure.

A unit value is not a price. Divide the declared customs value by the declared quantity and you get an average across every grade, every construction and every order that cleared that month. It is an excellent instrument for direction, for spotting who is trading up and who is being squeezed, and a bad one for pricing a style. Treat a move in unit value as a signal to ask a question, never as a quotation.

Per piece and per kilogram are not interchangeable. Where customs reported the piece count, price per piece is real and varies properly between suppliers. Weight is usually estimated rather than read off the entry, which gives every supplier of a product the same value to weight ratio and makes per kilogram comparisons between them meaningless. The same can happen to piece counts: for the newest months UN Comtrade sometimes estimates them too, and then every supplier comes out at exactly the same price. So our tables compare partners on price per piece, and count only the months in which the pieces were reported.

It is late, and it is revised. United States data reaches Comtrade about seven weeks after the month ends; Eurostat and HMRC run about two months behind. Recent months are preliminary. So compare a month with the same month a year earlier and never with the month before it: apparel buying is strongly seasonal and a month on month move is mostly the calendar talking. Our garment tables lead with twelve months against the twelve before, because one month of one product can swing on a single shipment.

Checking a supplier or a certificate

Free registers that answer what a quotation never can: does this company exist at the address on the letterhead, is the certificate it is waving genuine and still current, and is anybody upstream on a banned list. Each of these takes about a minute, and every one of them is worth more before the sample order than after it.

    Type in a STANDARD 100, MADE IN GREEN or STeP number and see whether that certificate is real and still valid. Open to anybody, no login. An OEKO-TEX claim is the certificate most often presented in this trade and the one most often quietly expired, and this is a one minute check against the issuer’s own register.

    The American list of companies whose goods are barred from entering the United States under the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, dense with ginners, spinners, weavers and garment makers, each carrying the date it was added, and still being added to this month. A shipment is stopped by anybody upstream being on this list, not only by your own supplier being on it, so read it before a first American order rather than after a detention.

Labelling and import rules

What the goods themselves have to satisfy in the market you are selling into, as against what they cost to land there. These are the rules that reject a finished consignment after it is made, which is the most expensive moment to find out about them.

Why this page is only links

Several of the best data services in this industry are commercial products that people pay for. Copying their numbers onto our page would be taking something that is not ours, and it would also mean you are reading a second hand figure with no way to check it. So we link, and you read it at the source.

If you know a source that belongs on this page, tell us. We will look at it and add it if it is genuinely useful.

How the "for what I buy" filter decides

A source is on your list if you would actually open it, not if it sits upstream of you. Cotton is upstream of everybody, and that is not a reason to send a brand founder to a drought map. Where a source genuinely serves more than one buyer it is on more than one list, which is why the counts add up to more than 78. The producer price indexes are on the fibre, yarn and fabric lists for exactly that reason.

12 sources carry no buyer at all and are never filtered out: freight, currency, the country cost indicators and the chain wide newswire. There is no buyer who does not need to know what a container costs.

Which of these sources can I read without paying?

Most of them, and the page marks each one as free to read or a paid service, along with the licence each one is published under. Where a series is behind a paywall we say so rather than quietly leaving it out.

Do you ever publish your own arithmetic as if it were a source?

No. Where we combine two published series, convert a unit or average a range, it is labelled as ours with the inputs named so you can redo it. The distinction between what somebody else published and what we worked out is the point of this page.

  • Sweatshirts and hoodies (categories). Seven searches (Openverse and Wikimedia Commons, including German titles). Every commercially licensed candidate was rejected: a person wearing the garment, a brand print (Armani Exchange, Billabong, FWO Clothing), a Wikipedia-article print, or a 3D render. No folded or hanging hoodie without a logo was found. Round 2 (12 October, seven more searches: hoodie folded, hooded sweatshirt hanger, sweatshirts stack, grey hoodie, hoodie, sweatshirt, hooded sweatshirt; originals 1400 px or wider): 40 candidates reviewed. Every garment-only photo carried a brand or a print (Armani Exchange, Scapino, Sonoma, a Vaccinated hoodie, a Wikipedia-article print); the rest were wearers with visible faces, murals, hooded crows or a drawing. The one face-free photo (a hooded figure seen from behind at a lake, CC0) shows mostly a quilted jacket, so it was not used.
  • Activewear and leggings (categories). Six searches. Every leggings or yoga-pants result showed a person wearing them (one with a Calvin Klein waistband); the rest were unrelated (animals, drawings, elastic close-ups). No folded leggings or sports tops without a person or brand were found.
  • Tracksuits and joggers (categories). Three searches on 12 October (jogger pants, tracksuit, sweatpants folded; Openverse and Wikimedia Commons, originals 1400 px or wider). Every usable result was a Uniqlo or AEON shop display with price tags and the shop name, a woman jogging, or a cartoon; no plain tracksuit or joggers without a brand or a person.
  • Knit dresses (categories). Three searches on 12 October (knit dress mannequin, knitted dress, jersey dress hanger). Results were WW2 museum uniforms on mannequins and a Missoni dress on display (brand name in the title and on the display); no plain knit dress without a label was found.
  • Underwear and loungewear (categories). Six searches. Garment-only results all failed a rule: boxer shorts with brand waistbands (Floque, Ben Nevis) or a text label (Pendelverkehr), men wearing undershirts, and one Amsterdam Museum boxer-short photo of a 2000 to 2015 object that Commons tags PD-Old-100 and PD-US-expired, which cannot apply to a modern photograph, so its licence counts as unverified. Round 2 (four more searches: folded boxer shorts, cotton underwear stack, loungewear set, pyjama set folded) found only a woman modelling a grey loungewear set with her face visible, plus the same branded boxer shorts.
  • viscose/rayon staple fibre, or wood pulp sheets for viscose (process). Three search rounds (Openverse + Wikimedia Commons, 23 candidates: viscose fibre, rayon staple, Viskosefaser, pulp sheets bale, etc.) returned no photograph of viscose fibre or dissolving pulp. The only on-topic images were factory exteriors: Saeteri viscose fibre factory, Valkeakoski (Wikimedia Commons, CC BY 3.0, 3072x2304, raw/viscose-fibre/06.jpg) and an aerial of the AV Nackawic dissolving-pulp mill (CC BY 4.0, 12081x8054, raw/viscose-fibre/08). Both are wrong subject (buildings, not fibre), so nothing was converted; either could be used as a stand-in on request.
